How to shop online: 10 useful tips about online shopping

I love to shop online! Sitting in your sweatpants on an afternoon, not wearing a bra, drinking a cup of coffee and being able to shop at the same time. That is what I call a perfect afternoon! I have learned many things about online shopping over the years so I thought I would share some tips with you.

1. Carefully choose the right shipping method

I always tend to go for the cheapest one. Free shipping when you buy 50 euros worth of products? Yes, please! But here is the catch: you usually get the one without tracking and some stores will not even pack your things properly when you choose the cheapest method.

2. Be careful with next-day-delivery

Even I tend to forget the next tip sometimes. When I order something last-minute I tend to pay a few euros extra for next-day-delivery. But it almost never gets here on time. Should I try to order earlier? Yes. Should they let me pay extra if it is not even going to be here the next day? No.

3. Be aware of extra taxes

The next tip is extremely important if you buy something from a web store based outside Europe (or basically anything that has to be shipped from another continent). If you purchase something from an Asian website you will have to pay their amount of shipping PLUS more when it gets to your country. You will have to pay taxes in your own country for importing these products. This is usually based on weight and/or size and can get to extreme highs without you even realizing it. So please, bare that in mind while shopping online!

4. The season does matter

While reading this title you will probably think ‘I have no idea what she is talking about’ but it is actually quite simple. If your product has to get here by plane in the middle of August during a heatwave, chances are it will melt! Oil based makeup can melt under very high temperatures.

5. Use your wishlist

I am a wishlist-champion! I use them on almost every website I often visit. It is a great way to stop buying things on impulse. You get the time to rethink the purchase you are about to make and you might even find something better or cheaper on a different website.

6. Be on the lookout for online sales

Lots of websites have regular price drops (like BH Cosmetics for example). If there is no sale for the moment you might be able to find a coupon code online. And do not forget public holidays in other countries; holidays and public sales often go hand in hand!

7. Subscribe to newsletters

Most of you probably hate to get newsletters because they clutter your mailbox. But if you do buy things online on a regular basis I suggest you subscribe to your favourite online stores. They might send you great deals and exclusive competitions. If you do not wish to get so many emails, you can always update your preferences.

8. Compare

I love to compare websites. Do not just stick to one website because you know how they operate. Go on a limb and compare the ones you know and love to different ones. You might be surprised with what you find.

Oh, and do not forget to compare national websites to international ones. is for example, way cheaper than even with shipping costs included!

9. Look on Ebay for discontinued items

It is so disappointing when a product you have been loving for so long suddenly turns out to be discontinued or is just ‘limited edition only’. If that one product you love so much has been discontinued you might still be able to find it on Ebay.
