I have been blogging for almost a year now. The time has flown by so quickly. It has been one crazy but amazing journey. I would definitely encourage anyone who is thinking of starting a blog to just do it!
However, some parts of blogging have been super stressful. I previously talked about the ups and downs of blogging (post here) to paint a realistic picture of what blogging really is like (in my opinion anyway). But despite the few negative points I mentioned in that post there are so many reasons why having a blog is beneficial to you. In order to convince you to join me in the blogging world, I decided to list 10 reasons why you should start blogging.

1. Share your passion with the world
Have a passion for horses or like painting motivational quotes onto paper? You can talk about it on your blog and share it with the world. Trust me, there will be people out there who want to read it. They might even be inspired and your passion may become theirs. That is what I love most about blogging, being able to inspire and help people. Being able to make people smile.
2. Improve your writing style and photography skills
Despite what you might think, you do not have to be the best writer or photographer to be able to blog. I did study journalism but English is not my first language. I have a DSLR but only had 5 photography lessons throughout university (and they weren’t really good either). Blogging will without a doubt help you improve those skills. After almost a year of blogging I can see some improvement and I hope I keep improving more and more. It is such a nice feeling to see you are getting better at something!
3. Get recognition for your work
Blogging is hard work. Non-bloggers do not always see it that way, which can bet a bit annoying sometimes. But most of us put a lot of time and effort in our blogs and it feels super rewarding when someone says that your post is amazing or that it has inspired them in a way. Your hard work will pay off!
4. Do something useful with your spare time
This might seem a bit harsh but like I, you might spend a lot of time on the internet (and social media in particular). It is great to actually put all of that ‘wasted time’ to good use. Blogging is a great hobby to have, it is original and different. And in my opinion blogging is as much of a hobby as any other.
5. Earn a bit extra pocket money
If you have been blogging for a while and are good at it, you can earn a little extra money by selling advertising space to other bloggers (for example). There are so many different ways for you to explore but remember not to overdo it. Your readers will not like the look of advertisements everywhere and they might stop visiting your blog. The additional income shouldn’t be the reason why you start blogging either. Passion is the most important thing to have when you start blogging.
6. It looks good on your cv (résumé)
Having a blog will look good on your cv. Even if you aren’t looking for a job in the communication, journalism or the pr-sector, it is a good idea to put it on your cv. It shows dedication, the ability to handle deadlines (if you have a regular blogging schedule), the ability to understand a target audience and so many more qualities. Plus it also differentiates you from the 100 other applicants for the job.
7. Let your voice be heard
Have a topic you feel passionate about but don’t really know how to express it? A blog is the right answer. It is your blog, your place on the internet. You decide what to talk about. But be aware that not everyone will agree with you. And that is okay, as long as they are respectful about it anyway. Life would be boring if we all had the same opinions, wouldn’t it?
8. Learn about social media, Google Analytics, seo and more
I spend so many hours reading about Google Analytics and learning about SEO. I have become pretty good at social media and know a lot about it. I have acquired these skills through blogging and have already put them on my cv. It is certainly an advantage that you have not only seen the theory but you also have practical experience using these tools.
9. Meet new people
Blogging is a great way to meet like-minded people. Even though I live in Belgium and have not had the chance to go to an event (which are usually based in the U.K.) yet, I feel so fortunate to be able to call some of these bloggers my friends. And you do not have to be super confident to have a blog (or go to events/blogger meetups), most bloggers will welcome you with open arms.
10. Gain confidence
And that brings me to my final point. Blogging will help you gain confidence. Don’t feel like you are the best writer, best photographer or that your English isn’t perfect? Do you get nervous around people? Do social gatherings scare you? Blogging will definitely help you deal with all that. Most bloggers were very nervous in the beginning too, just like you are now. I still am when trying new blogging-related things today. Trying new things is scary but do not let it hold you back. You can do this!
Never forget, the scariest moment is always just before you start.
